The house at 503 East Park became the home of the entire family of Sadie Silk Dumes for a time. It appears that ownership of the house was passed around. It is finally sol by Abe Lieberman when the family had all relocated to the terre Haute area. The first thing we can see is the adverts for the house that Jacob must have seen.

The matriarch of the Dumes famiy in America from Vishki, Latvia was Sadie Silk Dumes. In August 1933, Sadie was walking with her friend and crossing a very busy intersection. Both ladies were struck by a car; the driver fled the scene. Sadie's friend survived, but Sadie was killed. I've collected a number of newsclips that tell the story.

Family legend has it that Grandma meant to name my father Stanley Herman, but got it mixed up after his birth. The family always called him Stanley, and he legally changed it in 1953. His name came from his grand Uncle Sender (also Shender or Sander) and his grandfather Chaim. His Hebrew name was Chaim Sander, where Herman came from Chaim and Stanley came from Sander, and that's probably why the name mix-up happened. Grandma might have been thinking of the Jewish name order

In 1963, my father Stanley Dumes ran for Mayor of Vincennes, Indiana, so there were a number of ads and campaign related references. I remember it very well. My first taste of beer was at one of the parties held at my house. They used to sprinkle salt in the beer can, and one man told me it was 'Democratic Beer' that way. It was pretty putrid beer, actually. I remember on election morning, I had permission to miss some class in order to hand out 'Stan Is The Man' matchbooks and fingernail files outside of my school, which was a voting location. They still had the old fashioned voting machines, with selectable names in individual brass tabs. Or if you wanted to vote 'straight party', that is, all Democratic or all the other one. For straight party, you made one selection for the party, then pulled a big brass lever across the width of the machine, that made a huge clanging noise. The other voters could tell you had voted straight party, but not which party. I remember on election night, my brother Harold and I went walking to a couple of the places where they counted the votes, and you could see them being tallied on a big board. Bruce Dumes June 2025
