Leib-Wulf Dumesh

Dumes Key: CC The 'Dumes Key' is an easy way to determine someone's place in the family tree.

At the top of the tree are brothers Chaim (A), Jossel-Leib (B) and Schender (C). Each generation adds a letter; the letter represents your birth order, A for the 1st, B for the 2nd, etc.

So Sarah, first child of Chaim, is AA. Her husband, Jacob Kaplan, is Aa, the lower-case a indicating that he married into the Dumes family.

I've also used the lower-case letter for my two step-sons to indicate a non-bloodline Dumes relationship.

Leib-Wulf's occupation was as a school teacher.

From December 30, 1940 the family of Leib-Wulf Dumes lived in Riga at Jumaras Street 18, apt. 6 (previous address Stabu Street 75, apt. 2). Leib-Wulf, his wife Schula and daughters were struck off the house register in October of 1941 and moved to the ghetto. From October 7, 1941 they were registered as living at Ludzas Street 11-10 (territory of Riga ghetto during Nazi occupation).

Leib-Wulf was still alive on July 20, 1942 when he was registered in the lists of Jews forced labourers of Missa Torfwerk (peat factory). His address in ghetto that time was Vilanu Street 16-2 and his occupation was a glazier.

We have recently learned that Leib-Wulf survived the war and immigrated to the US. He lived in Brooklyn as Wulf Dumes.
