Dumes Key: ABDC The 'Dumes Key' is an easy way to determine someone's place in the family tree.

At the top of the tree are brothers Chaim (A), Jossel-Leib (B) and Schender (C). Each generation adds a letter; the letter represents your birth order, A for the 1st, B for the 2nd, etc.

So Sarah, first child of Chaim, is AA. Her husband, Jacob Kaplan, is Aa, the lower-case a indicating that he married into the Dumes family.

I've also used the lower-case letter for my two step-sons to indicate a non-bloodline Dumes relationship.

Denise Conrad, 70, of Carmi, IL, passed away at 10:09 a.m., Monday, August 14, 2017, at Carmi Manor, in Carmi, IL.

Denise was born May 13, 1947 in Canton, OH, the daughter of Solomon & Evelyn (Swimmer) Dumes. Denise graduated from Carmi Township High School and graduated from Southeastern Illinois College. She was an Early Childhood Aide.

She is survived by her daughter, Carla Conrad, of Villa Rica, GA and son, Travis (Jessica) Conrad, of Fairfield, IL; her brother Michael S. (Linda) Dumes, of Newman, GA, Howard F. "Rick" Dumes (Barbara Shivers) of Atlanta, GA, Randy S. (Melissa) Dumes, of Paducah, KY; four grandchildren, Ryan Conrad, Haylee Conrad, Ava Shaw, and Bailey Shaw.

Denise is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Max Conrad.
