Unknown on the left, Rebecca Dumes Lieberman on the right. If you look at the ship manifest for Rebecca, you'll note that in the area where they ask for 'name and complete address of nearest relative or friend in country whence alien came', you'll see written: 'Sch Dumes, Wiski', which is Sheina Dumes, of course, and Wiski is Vishki.<br><br>

Becky Stein and Louis Dumes. I'm guessing these were made for their wedding, so I put the year at 1912. They were waiting on mother Sadie and siblings Arthur, Anna and William to arrive from Vishki. They were married soon after Sadie's arrival on August 19. In the documents page, you can see the newspaper announcement of their wedding, The Champaign Daily Gazette Sept 30, 1912.

Sadie and Fannie Dumes. I'm guessing this photo was taken soon after Sadie's arrival in America. The houses pictured are definitely not what you would have seen architecturally in Vishki, or even Daugavpils. If you look at the manifest for Feige, you'll note that the 'ame and complete address of nearest relative or friend in country whence alien came', you'll see written: 'Scheine Dumesch Wiskis, Witebsk Gub'. 'Scheine' is Sadie, Wiskis is Vishki and Witebsk is Vitebsk. The 'Gub' stands for Gubernia. A Gubernia was a very large area in Russia, named for the largest city in the district. <br>

Louis Dumes tending bar. Lillian Dumes Zoll told me that her father, Louis, had worked as a bartender in Brooklyn. <br><br>I'm dating this as 1912 (or before) based on the fact that there is a keg of Trommer's Beer. Trommer's Beer was manufactured in Brooklyn and did not have national distribution at that time, so this picture was probably taken in Brooklyn. We know that by August 1912, Louis was living in Champaign, IL, so this picture must have been taken before that. The name of the place appears to be Reiser's Cafe as written over the cash register. It's easier to read on the original black and white version, as is the Trommer's Beer sign. <br><br>In the New York Times of Nov. 14, 1971, Arthur Katzman wrote of getting election results in the early days: They used to flash the results up by magic lantern at Reiser's Cafe at Pitkin and Rockaway. Everybody cared in those days.<br><br>There are some older structures still standing at the corner of Pitkin and Rockaway, but nothing to indicate that Reiser's Cafe was ever there.

Rebecca Dumes Lieberman, Louis Dumes, Rebecca Stein Dumes. I have no yet found Louis' immigration info, so it's unclear exactly when he came to America. In the 1920 census, Louis said he immigrated 1906. However, Lillian Dumes Zoll wrote: 'My father Louis came to America in 1905, passing through Ellis Island. He was able to work in a foundry in Suffern, New York, but he didn't stay there very long.'

Abe and Becky Lieberman wedding photo. Abe and Becky were actually married twice. Once on February 27, 1913 in a civil ceremony and again in a religious ceremony on May 25, 1913 officiated by Jacob Kaplan with family and guests invited.

L to R: George, Hy, Helen Anna known as'Babe', mother Sarah, Rebecca, and father Rabbi Jacob Kaplan. Sarah was my grandfather's oldest sibling, daughter of Chaim and Scheina (Sadie in America) Dumes. Jacob had come to Vishki to study with a rabbi who was famous in the region, and he found room and board at the Dumes household. <br><br>Some time ago, Harry and Caroline Lieberman recorded some family history questions they posed to Babe Kaplan Bennett on a cassette, and so I was able to transcribe some of her stories, such as this one. Babe said it was a great honor for them to have a student. And before too long, Jacob and Sarah were married.

Becky Lieberman and baby Ben. Ben later started calling himself 'J. Ben' as an affectation, according to his son Jethro, who wrote: Benjamin was NOT a middle name. His given name was Benjamin Lieberman. Sometime in high school, possibly because he was very short then or because he had an inflated ego, or both, the kids got to calling him 'J. Ben', as in 'J. Pierpont Morgan', and other such 'J. xxx' names. Evidently he liked it, and the usage stuck.
