There's something about color. The original version of this photo looks like it could be some family in The Grapes of Wrath, struggling to get food on the table. But the color version brings out the familial warmth. The little girl is Lillian Dumes Zoll, daughter of Louis and Rebecca Stein Dumes. The older boy is their eldest son, Hy Dumes. Lillian was born in 1922, so this is perhaps '24 or '25? (1924)

Jossel Dumesh, son of Shender. There is an expression to which several cultures lay claim. Before becoming a genealogist, my wife was an Egyptologist. She asserts that the Egyptians said it first: 'To say the dead man’s name is to make him live again'. The Nazis didn’t want to just kill the Jews. They wanted to eradicate any evidence of their existence. To remove their names.

This is one of the reasons that I study and document my family history and the history of Vishki, the place in Latvia where my grandfather was born. These photos are of my cousin Jossel and his wife Dina. Jossel was born in Vishki, as was Dina.

In 1941 when the Nazis came to Latvia, Jews were forced into restricted areas, essentially concentration camps, called ghettos. Starvation, extreme confinement, forced labor, daily beatings and worse made them different from concentration camps in name only. I visited the site of the Riga ghetto in 2009. I still feel the chill that I felt looking around the place. I took photos, but the photos didn't capture the dark emotions that the place evoked in me.

I'm not particularly inclined towards the idea of ghosts or spirits that unhappily linger on in a place, but I sure had that feeling standing there. My Israeli cousin Rina comes from the same family branch as Jossel. Her mother was Jossel's half-sister Leah, who moved to Israel when it was still called Palestine in 1933. Jossel, Dina and daughter Baschewa died in the Riga ghetto in 1941. (1928)

Uncle Arthur and Aunt Jennie Dumes, Libby, Norma, and William, also known as Sonny. This is my grandfather's brother Arthur and his wife Jennie, with their children Libby, Norma, and William I. Dumes. My grandfather was William J. Dumes and his brother Louis' son was William S. Dumes. The name William in "the old country" was Wulf, with the Hebrew name Zev, because Zev is the Hebrew word for wolf. It was an old family name. My grandfather's grandfather was named Wulf, and he was named for him. My son's middle name is William, named for my grandfather. William's grandson was named for him. (~1928)

Stan is wearing the same clothes as he wore in the 1929 reunion photo, but the license plate on the car says "Indiana 30". I don't know if that meant it was already 1930, or if the plate was good through 1930, but fair to say it was either '29 or '30. (1929)
