Family Movies

You may be surprised to learn that William J. Dumes started filming the family in the 1930s, and every branch of the family is represented in his collection. His films make the basis of what is presented here.

Early reels were 8mm black & white, with occasional splurges on color stock. In the 1950s he moved to 16mm, and some of those clips are remarkably sharp. These movies are a vivid record of the Sadie Silk Dumes family in America.

For me, this completes an assignment my father gave me over 50 years ago: to find a way to share these films with the whole family.

Sarah Dumes Kaplan, regrettably headless (1936)

8MM · Black & White

Sarah Dumes Kaplan was the eldest daughter of Sadie Silk Dumes. She married Jacob Kaplan while they were still in Vishki. For a time in the late 1930s, she and Jacob lived with her youngest brother William J. Dumes in Vincennes. Jacob was a Rabbi and taught Stan Dumes to read Hebrew during this time.

In this short clip, we see Stan walking with Sarah, who is unfortunately headless in the shot. It was a short-coming of these old cameras; they did not have "through the lens" view-finders, so it was sometimes difficult to know where to point the camera. Then we see Sarah walking with Stan's mother Freda Fialco Dumes.

The clip is 1m 17s long.

Freda Dumes and Georgia Fishman. (1936)

8MM · Monochrome

Freda Fialco Dumes was the wife of William J. Dumes, the usual cameraman and son of Sadie Silk Dumes. Georgia Helen Fishman was Freda's niece, the youngest child of Max and Fannie Dumes Fishman. This is a very short, but very sweet clip of the two of them walking together.

The clip is 11s long.

The Fialco family in Cincinnati. (1937)

8MM · Black & White

Party time! Welcome to an episode of The Fialco family, related to Freda Fialco Dumes, wife of William J. Dumes. Freda was as quiet as quiet could be, but some in her family made up for it! They loved to sing, dance and have a great time. So get ready to party like it's 1939!!

This clip is 6m 55s.

Meet the ancestors: Sarah, Louis, Rebecca, Fannie, Anna, William (1937)

8MM · Black & White

This is quite a movie! Every branch of the Dumes family is represented. I don't think Arthur Dumes is in the film, but there are two men I can't identify. I think one might be Max Fishman, but I'm not sure who the other might be. I was told that Abe Schultz rarely attended family events because he was always working. Arthur's daughters are here, though I don't see his son Bill I.

This clip is really an astonishing bit of family history. Enjoy!

Jewish Picnic (1938)

8MM · Black & White

No identifications on this one yet, but I think it's one of the Jewish picnics in Vincennes. It's very early in black and white.

Ben Karp (1938)

8MM · Black & White

A very short, but really nice clip of a very dashing Ben Karp. I believe his is coming out of William J. Dumes' house on 504 N. 1st Street. Any better guess of the year is appreciated.

Ben Karp married Jeannette Dumes, daughter of Louis Dumes, son of Sadie Silk. He was instrumental in the founding of the synagogue in Vincennes, along with Louis and William J. Dumes.

This clip is 10s long.

Sylvia and Fannie Dumes Fishman (1939)

8MM · Black & White

This clip shows Sylvia Fishman with her mother Fannie Dumes Fishman. Those with sharp eyes can spot my father Stan very briefly in the beginning.

Sylvia had a tragic end, killed along with her husband Barney in an auto accident, only 21 years old. Sylvia looks like she was quite a character!

This clip is 2m41s long.

8MM · Monochrome

In addition to Harry, Dora, Abe and Rebecca, there is a woman with a very young child. I'm sure it must be a Lieber-baby. I'm wondering if the lady is the wife of Ben or Hy.

Stan Dumes, William J. Dumes (1940)

8MM · Color

Stan Dumes, William J. Dumes. I'm guessing around 1940 or 1941 from the age of Stan. This is one of the 8mm color films, so it's fun to have this era preserved in color. It's basically my father Stan and his sister Mildred horsing around with their cousins.

The clip is 1m 53s long.
