Family Movies

You may be surprised to learn that William J. Dumes started filming the Dumes family in the 1930s, and every branch of the family is represented in his collection. His films make the basis of what is presented here.

The first movies in the 1930s were in 8mm black and white, but he sometimes splurged on the color film, which must have cost a fortune. But the images are very pretty. Sometime in the early 50s he went to 16mm, and some of the clips are excellent. The quality of the movies vary, but they are a wonderful record of the Sadie Silk Dumes family in America.

For me, this is the culmination of an assignment given to me by my Dad over 50 years ago to find a way to best distribute these movies, which he considered to be treasured items to the family.

Click on the images below to watch the movies. These are all now, or soon will be, newly remastered in HD, 1280x720.

Sarah Dumes Kaplan, regrettably headless (1936)

Sarah Dumes Kaplan was the eldest daughter of Sadie Silk Dumes. She married Jacob Kaplan while they were still in Vishki. For a time in the late 1930s, she and Jacob lived with her youngest brother William J. Dumes in Vincennes. Jacob was a Rabbi and taught Stan Dumes to read Hebrew during this time.

In this short clip, we see Stan walking with Sarah, who is unfortunately headless in the shot. It was a short-coming of these old cameras; they did not have "through the lens" view-finders, so it was sometimes difficult to know where to point the camera. Then we see Sarah walking with Stan's mother Freda Fialco Dumes.

The clip is 1m 17s long.

Freda Dumes and Georgia Fishman. (1936)

Freda Fialco Dumes was the wife of William J. Dumes, the usual cameraman and son of Sadie Silk Dumes. Georgia Helen Fishman was her niece, the youngest child of Max and Fannie Dumes Fishman. This is a very short, but very sweet clip of the two of them walking together.

The clip is 11s long.

Party time! Welcome to an episode of The Fialco family, related to Freda Fialco Dumes, wife of William J. Dumes. Freda was as quiet as quiet could be, but some in her family made up for it! They loved to sing, dance and have a great time. So get ready to party like it's 1939!!

Meet the ancestors: Sarah, Louis, Rebecca, Fannie, Anna, William (1937)

This is quite a movie! Every branch of the Dumes family is represented. I don't think Arthur Dumes is in the film, but there are two men I can't identify. I think one might be Max Fishman, but I'm not sure who the other might be. I was told that Abe Schultz rarely attended family events because he was always working. Arthur's daughters are here, though I don't see his son Bill I.

This clip is really an astonishing bit of family history. Enjoy!

A very short, but really nice clip of a very dashing Ben Karp. I believe his is coming out of William J. Dumes' house on 504 N. 1st Street. Any better guess of the year is appreciated.

Bill on bike, watch out world! (1958)

My grandfather, William J. Dumes, was not known for being one of the world's great drivers. His bike handling skills look a bit out of practice too. But despite this, everyone seems to be having a lovely time eating outside in his back yard in Vincennes.

This is Uncle John's Kiddieland, which was a legendary place in Vincennes. I spoke of it with such fondness and grandeur that when I showed this movie to my son Greg, he was deeply disappointed to see that this was all it was! Compared to Disneyland, maybe a disappointment, but we loved it.

Groovin' with the cousins (1967)

It's October 7, 1967. Groovin' by the Young Rascals just hit #1 in May, and that summer it seemed like the song was everywhere.

This is the family of William J. Dumes in play, first in Mildred's backyard in Bloomington, and then on another day in W.J.'s backyard in Vincennes. William, wife Freda, children Stan and his wife Phyl and kids Harold, Sandi and Bruce (me). Mildred and her children Anita, Adie and Alan.

Dave Dansker had just passed away in March. I remember him as a nice man who had the most amazing collection of National Geographic magazines. And I remember him humorously singing "Li'l Red Riding Hood" by Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs and howling like Sam did on the record.
