At the top of the tree are brothers Chaim (A), Jossel-Leib (B) and Schender (C). Each generation adds a letter; the letter represents your birth order, A for the 1st, B for the 2nd, etc.
So Sarah, first child of Chaim, is AA. Her husband, Jacob Kaplan, is Aa, the lower-case a indicating that he married into the Dumes family.
I've also used the lower-case letter for my two step-sons to indicate a non-bloodline Dumes relationship.
Max's father
Wolf Fishman
b. 1857
d. 1915
Hebrew name was Elimelech. Buried in Terre Haute, IN.
Max escaped from Russia about the age of 16. He was putting Socialist pamphlets into the boots of the Russian soldiers and a gentile warned Max's father that Max was about to be arrested. When Max got to the border because he was underage, he was given the choice of taking another family's last name and going across as the family's child or changing his age. He chose to change his age and ever after insisted he didn't know how old he was.
He tells the story that on the boat coming to America he ate the boat food. But there was a poor religious man who wouldn't eat the boat's non-kosher food and had no kosher food of his own so he was starving. And there were a brother and sister with a big trunk of kosher food who wouldn't share or sell any of their food. So Max bought a needle and thread from a sailor on the boat. Then Max cut a hole in the trunk and stole kosher food for the starving man. Finally Max sewed up the hole in the trunk with the needle and thread.
Max married Fannie Dumes, 01/03/1915, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He died in June of 1978 in Philadelphia. His son Bill flew family members from Philadelphia to the funeral on the Lear jet owned by ARA, the corporation of which Bill was chairman at that time.
