Dumes.Net
At the top of the tree are brothers Chaim (A), Jossel-Leib (B) and Schender (C). Each generation adds a letter; the letter represents your birth order, A for the 1st, B for the 2nd, etc.
So Sarah, first child of Chaim, is AA. Her husband, Jacob Kaplan, is Aa, the lower-case a indicating that he married into the Dumes family.
I've also used the lower-case letter for my two step-sons to indicate a non-bloodline Dumes relationship.
from Ariel Kernis (great-niece of Al) and her partner Sonja:
"I cannot begin to tell you how much I loved him and loved spending time with him at family gatherings. His playfulness and deep love for family, his sense of humor and charm, his ready smile and willingness to dance, his support of me and Sonja. What a remarkable man. He transcended generations with such ease. I so admired his accomplishments (including, at the top of the list, his wonderful family) and that he never stopped learning -- Spanish and organ! -- and engaging with the world. He will always be an inspiration to us and have a special place in our hearts."

Albert S. Katz
April 23, 1921 - June 26, 2009
MISHAWAKA - Albert Katz, originally from Mishawaka, died peacefully in his sleep on June 26th in Sunnyvale, CA. Albert was 88 years old. Adoring husband of Blanche Schultz Katz; brother of Morris (Cookie); father of Fred (Pam), Gerri (Walter), Harriet (Richard) Abbe (Craig); 11 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Al attended Nuner Elementary, Central High School, received a B.S. in electrical engineering from Purdue and an MBA from Indiana University. Albert was a first lieutenant in WWII, serving in the 290th Field Artillery. Al consulted with industry, was well-respected for his teaching, and was writing a book on statistical quality control. He loved to dance with his wife, play bridge, study numerous languages, and never stopped pursuing his love of learning. He enjoyed lively conversation and discussing the events of the day, but most of all he loved taking his grandchildren to Potawatomi Park to feed the ducks. His gregarious manner and expansive smile will be missed. Burial was in San Francisco, CA, with a memorial planned for later in the summer in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
