At the top of the tree are brothers Chaim (A), Jossel-Leib (B) and Schender (C). Each generation adds a letter; the letter represents your birth order, A for the 1st, B for the 2nd, etc.
So Sarah, first child of Chaim, is AA. Her husband, Jacob Kaplan, is Aa, the lower-case a indicating that he married into the Dumes family.
I've also used the lower-case letter for my two step-sons to indicate a non-bloodline Dumes relationship.

Sharon Levin Karp, 75, of Evansville, Indiana passed away at 10:35 am, Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at West River Health Campus. Sharon was born August 16, 1937 in Evansville, the daughter of Herman "Hymie" and Ann Hornstein Levin. She was a member of Temple Adath B'nai Israel and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Sharon had owned and operated Sharon's Bait Shop in Evansville.
She is survived by son, Steven Karp and his wife Julie Trockman Karp of Parkland, FL, grandchildren Sara Beth Cook and husband Terry of Henderson, KY, Michelle Karp of Parkland, FL and Annie Levin Adelman and great grandchildren, Sierra and Chloe Wilson and Kaiden Adelman, all of Henderson, KY. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 43 years, Sol F. Karp in April 2000, daughter Lori D. Karp and April 1998 and brother, Irvin Levin in November 1991.
