This cute one is my Aunt Mildred, on the left, my Dad's sister with cousin Ruthie Fishman, who was one of my favorite people ever. I think this is around 1940, so they would both be 16. <br><br>Ruthie told me how close she and Mildred were. She told me a story about Mildred's driving prowess. She said they were driving down to Evansville on route 41 which at that time was just a 2-lane road, meaning you were driving against oncoming traffic. <br><br>Ruthie said she was starting to panic as there was a car trying to pass another one, and they were in their lane coming toward them. She said, 'Mildred, Mildred!' a couple of times, trying to get her attention, but Mildred was telling a story and wasn't going to be interrupted. <br><br>Finally, and it seemed to Ruthie as if it were at the final moment, Mildred veered onto the shoulder of the road, drove around the car and back onto the road after they passed, and Mildred never stopped talking the entire time.

There was a Jewish synagogue in Vincennes, Indiana from 1935 until 1965. The synagogue, 'shul' in Yiddish, was known as Hovas Hochim, and founded by Louis Dumes, William Dumes (my grandfather), Ben Karp, and a few others. <br><br>The cornerstone on the building was dedicated to my great-grandmother as 'Mother Dumes'. My Dad saved the cornerstone when the building was pulled down. But that's another story. <br><br>This photo is from April 8, 1944 when Jewish soldiers stationed at local George Field were invited to celebrate the Passover seder at the shul. Louis Dumes is standing with his back to us in the center.
